Our seven sustainability goals

To develop sustainable campuses, we have established seven ambitious company-wide goals. They guide how we shape, measure and follow up our sustainability efforts. We work closely with our customers and prioritise our initiatives based on local conditions and needs. Explore and read more about the seven goals below.

Net zero climate emissions by 2040

By 2040, we will have achieved a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared with 2019 levels. The remaining 10% will be offset through negative emissions.

These targets have been verified by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) Net-Zero Standard and are aligned with the Paris Agreement and the level of action climate science deems necessary to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

100% climate-resilient buildings

By 2040, we aim to achieve 100% climate-resilient buildings. We define a building as resilient when it reaches a low or moderately low risk classification.

As the climate changes, we must adapt accordingly as a property company. The construction and real estate sector has a significant responsibility to prepare our buildings for these new conditions.

10% reduction in purchased energy

By 2030, we aim to reduce the amount of purchased energy by 10% compared with 2026. This is an ambitious target given our already low baseline, having halved the amount of delivered energy between 2000 and 2025.

Increased biodiversity on campus

We aim to maintain a positive trend in biodiversity across our campuses. We monitor this continuously through ecological surveys.

The results provide guidance on how to develop our campuses while protecting natural assets and creating the conditions for enhanced biodiversity.

More sustainable use of premises

Akademiska Hus collaborates with universities to increase space utilisation. Using sensors, we can measure occupancy across a large share of our property portfolio—data that provides both us and our customers with valuable insights into how campuses can be developed more sustainably. We monitor progress and set annual targets to ensure we are moving in the right direction.

More circular material flows

We measure and track annually how we are increasing our share of circular material flows. By using renewable, recycled and reused materials in our projects, we achieve greater resource efficiency and a reduced climate footprint.

Improved perceived safety on campus

Socially sustainable and safe campuses promote health, well-being and community. Our goal is to increase the perceived safety on campus. We follow up on this through our annual customer survey, where we ask questions related to the area of safety, among other things.
